Cattle mortality as a sentinel for the effects of ambient air pollution on human health
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background Air pollution is a trigger for human mortality. Although studies of spontaneous animal disease can provide additional insights, the short-term effects of air pollution on mortality have never been studied in animal populations. Animal sentinels are less subject to concurrent exposures, bias due to confounding, and exposure misclassification than human populations. Therefore we investigated the association between ambient air pollution and the risk of mortality in dairy cows.

Review of studies on air quality status and its health effects in Iran
Background and Objective: Air pollution is a leading environmental risk factor on health and it is the major cause of death and disease at global level. Air pollution has been shown to have a significant share in the non-communicable diseases (NCDs) burden. After smoking, it is the second cause of deaths due to NCDs, associated with an increased risk of developing acute and chronic diseases and...
متن کاملEffects of short- and long-term exposures to ambient air pollution on COPD.
The London fog episode in 1952 was a sentinel event that indicated that short-term exposure to ambient air pollution could adversely influence the health of persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A review of autopsy records indicated a doubling of cases with COPD as a major finding compared with other periods [1]. The association between greater levels of ambient air polluti...
متن کاملAn Appropriate Theoretical Model for Developing Ambient Air Quality Standard in Iran Based on Standard Setting Approaches of Different Parts of the World
Background & objectives: Environmental standards are quantitative criteria for protecting the environment from pollution and degradation. One of the solutions to improve air quality status is to use reasonable limits to prevent excessive release of airborne contaminants from their various sources. On the other hand, these standards are effective in evaluating air pollution reduction strategies....
متن کاملLetter to the Editor: Applications Air Q Model on Estimate Health Effects Exposure to Air Pollutants
Epidemiologic studies in worldwide have measured increases in mortality and morbidity associated with air pollution (1-3). Quantifying the effects of air pollution on the human health in urban area causes an increasingly critical component in policy discussion (4-6). Air Q model was proved to be a valid and reliable tool to predicts health effects related to criteria pollutants (particula...
متن کاملبررسی ارتباط میان آلودگی هوای آزاد و مرگ در اثر بیماریهای تنفسی در کرمان، 1389- 1385
Background & Objectives: The effects of air pollutants on respiratory mortality and morbidity are among the major concerns today. Few studies have been published on the association between mortality and air pollution in Iran. Methods: This study was undertaken in Kerman, Iran. Mortality data was inquired from the Kerman City Health Authority (from March 2006 till Sept 2010) and air pollution da...
